As good as the 2022? | Bunnahabhain 12 Cask Strength 2023 REVIEW
I just bought it from a shop here in Italy and paid 70€... I'm conflicted between opening it or just let it sit there for a few years and flip it....
Recently I had a SM called as Glenturner in Dubai. Another uninformed purchase. Was a sad one. Anything to share on that brand
How the hell is Jura #1? Its relatively cheap where I am. I dont expect it to be amazing but for $30-40 bucks it does a lot more than a lot of things in its price range.
Thanks a lot for the video buddy. In fact I did not like the added colouring part of these overpriced SMs but they have mass appeal so I have to keep it. Jura I’ll completely agree. It’s so underwhelming and bland. Couldn’t say so to the person who offered it though. Keep up the good work
Jura ...Completely agree .... My whiskey club has blind tastings ...and I can pick it almost every time ... don't like it and it comes in last almost every time. Quite like the Balvinie Double wood but don't buy it now as it's doubled in price.
The two things I will say for Aberfeldy, first, while everyone else has jacked their prices to the moon, they have not, still 39.95 and second, it isnt the most exciting scotch but its an easy drinker.
Great video to show Americans know nothing about whisky, or how to speak English
A) This list is not my opinion. 50 people from a variety of countries took part in the survey. You clearly weren't paying attention. B) I'm not American.
I gotta start reading the backs of my bottles more often. Do the distilleries typically put cartoon theme songs on there? Or is this just a one off?
Those are some interesting choices I can put on my list. Thanks for including all the bottles for a screen shot.
Laphroig is a love/hate thing for people - the flavor either fits your palate or it doesn't. Personally, I LOVE it and always have an open bottle on hand. And I'm glad that it doesn't get the bs-hype that drives the price up on sub-par products from bigger names. It is my #1 Islay choice by far, and maybe because of the love (hype) it DOESN'T get, it saves me $20 a bottle. I'll take that every day. I was gifted a bottle of Jura in 2022 and a bottle of Auchentoshan way back in 2007. I didn't care for the Jura; the Auchentoshan was a solid pour, but that was 17 years ago so not relevant to what they produce today. I find the rest of the list exceptionally easy to avoid.
Agreed, and their current Caerdeas offering is spectacularly good.
It seems like the list separated into, these are not good whiskies and there are whiskies that taste good but are way too expensive these days. I like Macallan and Balvenie, but the price gouging these days make me walk past it in the store. Bowmore, Jura, Auchentoshen are a fast pass . Glenrothes is to inconsistent to trust, agree. Glen Moray likely should have been on the list too. Sadly Old Pultney 12 I enjoyed, but the new expression at weaker ABV lost me...I likely would have added the Singletons too.
I've tried the 12 and the regular 18. It's certainly nice whisky but the presentation is a real deal breaker for me. There's something really reminiscent of tourists souvenirs to the ridiculous bottles, not to mention the condescending ABVs. I recon those bottles aren't cheap - they could likely afford giving us the missing 3% ABV if they would just use a regular bottle. Besides, I will go out of my way to avoid anything with a lot of marketing, because paying extra for being manipulated is absurd.
Hi there. Glenrothes, interesting. The OBs I've had in my glass weren't to bad, but I had a few stunning IBs. Jura has the same problem for me like Dalmore, the cask influence is way too strong, as well as the flavour the casks are infusing into the whisky.
I’ve seen the Whisky In The 6 guys raving over a few different Glenallachies. I don’t get it. Sherry overcoats, as Ralfy might say. Way too many other options at same price points.
The hand movement when you exhale 😂
Good overview mate 👌 Honest take on it. I'm big on this style so I'm a fan and rate it.
Yeah it's a hit with loads of my friends. Totally a me thing. Cheers! 🥃
Enthusiasts are nerds…..That’s the problem with them…
I totally agree with the list, with the exception of Laphroaig.
Some of these choices are made from a straightforward snobbish opinion, just because they’re colored, low ABV or non chill filtered. There’s nothing wrong with Aberfeldy, Glenfiddich and Balvenie are perfectly fine drams for many people, especially newcomers to whisky. And they’re all under 50 EUR here. And Laphroiag and Aberlour have no right even being in no. 11. Macallan and Dalmore would easily be my number 1 and 2 though, but mostly because they’re very much overpriced for what you get.
This isn't to say they're bad brands or they shouldn't work for others. All opinions. My Patrons were asked what brands they're least likely to buy and they answered honestly. 🥃
Wow... You dumped on half the scotch on my shelves... But I guess that's to be expected from a guy who drinks Laphroaig
A) not my list B) all opinion, enjoy what you want C) Yup, I like Laphroaig Cheers.
Jura would be an easy winner for me simply because I expect so much more from a Island Scotch.
I've not seen it for less than £70ish in the UK. There's much better available here at that price. I think the whole range is a tad over rated and expensive but I would say the 10yo cask strength is the best of them if you like that sort of thing.
Newbie here. Why didn’t JW make the list? Not even worth rating?
i was hoping to see Tomatin on this list!
Glenallachie isn't my style either. Glorified by too many Billy Walker fan boys. I think we still need to wait a few more years to get a true impression. I'll wait, too many other better whiskies out there to enjoy in the mean time.
Had the same issue with this brand Didn't get them but the price tag in my region is 100$
Ouch, The Glenallachie labels. I always think about the last scène of Apocalypse Now with an dying Marlon Brando, “The horror……The horror”
You don’t need to try the 18y old one, it’s not worth to try, wasted money, one of my biggest flops in my whisky life.
Wow surprised u never really liked deanston 12 I found it great and for the price too!!,
I was able to try try the GA15 with the new label recently and was shocked by the thin mouthfeel. With no body at all, it drinks well below it's abv. Maybe the most overhyped brand in Scotchdom.
Hey Geoff. Any improvements to the heat and oakiness with a dash of water?
Yes, water helps! 🥃
Yeah, I'd agree with most of those. I am something of an Auchentoshan Three Wood fan. When I need to retreat to something 'smooth', I fall back on Auch3wood. I agree with the Laphroaig assessment and think that Ardmore should be added.
Thanks Geoff, another great review.
Just a really nice whisky
I understand why enthusiasts don’t like Balvenie, and it mostly has to do with the stats. But the whiskey itself is pretty darn good. The 12 Doublewood is a gold standard of a Speyside malt, to me personally.
Never had a bad Balvenie or Macallan.
Is that a new tasting glass? I thought Geoff used Glencairns before...
Oh well. I got a bottle with the old branding on sale for $85 USD. I hope it will be good. I actually liked the old label but then I’m old.
To me this is an ok dram, but I absolutely prefer the 10yo or the 12yo...or why not the new 9yo Amontillado Cask Finish at 48%abv, really good stuff🍷cheers
I've got two bottles of the 12 yo, and I'll skip the 15 ( on sale locally). Thanks for the heads up.
Cant comment all too much on this, so mostly just writing for the algo here. Never was into GlenAllachie for the reasons you’ve also mentioned. Its good whisky, just for the same money you can get Edradour, Glenturret, Glenfarclas, Tamdhu etc… if you’re going for that sherried style , so I never picked up a bottle myself - looks like its the same deal with this one
This is my favourite Glenallachie :) Sorry to hear that it's not your thing. Most of the times, I thought we have similar taste, definitely not for this one. I would give at least 88-89+. So weird that you are not into this weird whisky :)
I do like Glenallachie 15, but my go to sherry bomb is Edradour Caledonia 12! Any thoughts on the Caledonia? Cheers!
I much prefer Caledonia myself. Glad to hear you enjoy both, though. Cheers! 🥃
Thanks for reviewing. Think by now you know my ... eh... 'love' for grape pollution in whisky, so I'll keep my opinion to myself. Slàinte mhath
Hi Geoff, great review. I think you hit the spot. It is nice but not more than that. Had it some years ago, and thought it had nice mocha notes, but it just was not making it to the finish line.
I think you forgot to read the most important part of that old Flintstones label my friend: YABBA DABBA DOOOO🥃😅 Great video my friend, thanks for the fun time! Enjoy your week! Cheers 🥃🥃
A new Aberlour bottling popped up at a local shop that’s non chill filtered and 46% ABV. Aberlour Casg Annamh. Have you come across it by chance? Would appreciate a review if that bottle is available to you.
Hi Geoff, my Glen Allachie 15 bought back in 2020, drunk (🤔 liked) half the bottle ,then sealed it up,but strangely enough didn’t want to finish it and didn’t and still don’t want to buy another bottle. Good honest review Geoff, Slàinte 🥃
Interesting. I've had similar experiences with bottles. Indifference got the best of you there, it seems! 🥃
This only costs $85 in my market in Manila. Worth it for that price?
For that price of say it's quite fair! 🥃
@@Gwhisky Thanks!
so glenallachie just doesn't yabbadabbado it for you
Dammit why didn't I think of that before I shot the video? Well played. 😉🥃
Great review Geoff! I fully agree.
Cheers Kevin! 🥃
Interesting. I love your reviews, but my taste preferences are completely different from yours. However, your reviews are informative enough that I can usually glean from them whether I will like the whisky, regardless of where you land on it. As for Glenallachie, I like everything Billy Walker is putting out and love most of his stuff. The 15 is my favorite so far. The fact that you don’t like that it is cask dominated is exactly what I like about it. Too many distilleries are using cheap “seasoned” Sherry casks now. I really appreciate that Billy Walker is using good, active Sherry casks.
Appreciate the sentiment. The world would be a boring place if we all shared the same opinions! I agree that Glenallachie is using some quality casks, but the influence is just too heavy for me. Personally I tend to prefer the 10 over the 15. Cheers! 🥃
